How to Evaluate Pearl Quality: “Pearl Quality Rating” (Video)

Cultured pearls are beautiful and valued for their unique shapes and individually formed quality. However, because no two cultured pearls are exactly alike, their quality can be harder to judge. When you are evaluating the quality of cultured pearls, you must examine them closely to determine if an atypical shape or mark is simply a distinguishing aspect or an actual flaw in the pearl.

The six main standards used to evaluate pearl quality are: luster, shape, size, color, presence of blemishes on surface, and nacre thickness. As a general rule, the overall balance is more important than any single attribute, and it may be helpful to keep this in mind.

Luster – The quality and quantity of light reflected from the surface or beneath the surface of a pearl

Surface (presence of blemishes) – The absence of flaws or discoloration of the pearl

Shape – Whether the pearl is round, semi-round, button, drop, circled or baroque

Size – The diameter of the pearl when measured perpendicular to the drill hole

Color – The body color of the pearl and the overtone

Nacre thickness – Nacre is the pearly substance secreted by mollusks. Nacre thickness is not a price factor for natural pearls because they’re nearly all nacre. However, it is of critical importance in cultured saltwater pearls.

The most important quality consideration in evaluating a pearl is the pearl’s luster. Luster is the reflective quality of pearls.  The more deeply reflective the pearl is the higher the luster grade.  Pearls can be very highly reflective and are often surrounded by slight overtones of color. Pearls may also be as dull as chalk. Look for the reflection of nearby lights on the surface when evaluating a pearl. Generally speaking, the sharper and more clear the reflection, the better the luster of the pearl.

The second most important value factor when evaluating pearls is the surface. The fewer and smaller the flaws, the more valuable the pearl. Blemishes on single pearls tend to be more obvious and less acceptable than those on strands. It’s normal for pearl strands to have some flaws.

Natural pearls normally have more flaws than cultured akoya pearls. That’s because they’ve been in the oyster longer and have more time to develop blemishes. Cultured pearls from the South Seas are also more likely to have flaws than akoya, which have a thinner nacre coating.

Surface quality is evaluated by rolling the pearl to look for defects such as pits, cracks, discolorations or other blemishes. Pearls are a natural, organic gem so most will not exhibit perfectly clean surfaces; and those that do command a premium.

If the latter five quality attributes are equal, the larger a pearl’s size, the more valuable the pearl.

If you try to compare the luster of a South Sea pearl and an Akoya Pearl, it is possible that you will be disappointed with the former. Why? Because Akoya pearls are very famous for their outstanding brilliance, while South Sea pearls are much bigger than Akoya pearls.

The above criteria are the key to selecting pearls of good quality. There are, however, a few other things to be aware of. Pearls give the most natural glow under the morning sunlight. Spotlights also enhance their appearance. Therefore, if, when shopping for pearls, the items are being displayed under direct sunlight or bright artificial light, it would be best to request to have them removed before examining them. Furthermore, when red objects are present around pearls, reddish reflection automatically gives the appearance of a thick nacre. To be safe, it is advisable to shop in the morning, before the afternoon sky begins to change color, and to avoid wearing red or similar-colored clothing.
